Insights into Imaging
Click here to read all articles published in our gold open access journal Insights into Imaging. Among its latest highlights are the first joint publication on patient safety between the European Society of Radiology (ESR) and the European Federation of Radiographer Societies (EFRS) and the article ‘What the radiologist should know about artificial intelligence – an ESR white paper’.

European Radiology Experimental
The youngest member of the ESR Journals Family has seen an increase in submissions month after month. Become part of European Radiology Experimental’s story by submitting your article here or read all those that have already been published here.

ESR participation in lung cancer conference

The European Society of Radiology (ESR) participated, earlier this month, in a high-level roundtable on lung cancer screening in Brussels, Belgium. It was organised by the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Alliance for Personalised Medicine (EAPM), and was officially endorsed by the ESR. The meeting brought together stakeholders in the fight against lung cancer and urged for the implementation of lung cancer screening programmes throughout the EU.

ESOR GALEN Advanced Course on Women's Imaging, June 13 – 14, 2019; Malmö/Sweden
This course is aimed at senior residents, board-certified radiologists and fellows interested in women’s imaging, including breast and pelvic pathologies. Special focus will be given to the latest imaging techniques for the detection and characterisation of breast and gynaecologic tumours. Renowned European experts will ensure a high-quality teaching programme which combines lectures and interactive case discussions. Please click here for more information.

ESOR GALEN Advanced Course on Cardio-Thoracic Cross-Sectional Imaging, July 4 – 5, 2019; Tübingen/Germany
This course is aimed at senior residents and recently board-certified radiologists. Its purpose is to consolidate the knowledge in chest and cardiac radiology and to provide an integrated view to state-of-the-art cardio-thoracic cross-sectional imaging. The course is focused on the advanced applications of CT and MR in chest and cardiac imaging. The range of topics covers the currently most challenging areas of cardio-thoracic radiology such as management of acute chest pain patients with pulmonary infections or nodules, and the role of imaging in structural heart diseases. Please click here for more information.

The Nicholas Gourtsoyiannis Teaching Fellowship
The Nicholas Gourtsoyiannis Teaching Fellowship gives the opportunity to deliver lectures and/or undertake interactive workshops in a new environment. If you are a radiologist with clinical and academic experience, and you wish to improve your teaching and training skills, don’t miss this chance. Applications for the 2019 Fellowship are now open. European Training Assessment Programme (ETAP)

We are thrilled to announce that University Hospital Basel, King's College Hospital London and the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona have all graduated from the ETAP 2.0 programme with excellent results. They proved that their training departments meet the quality standards set by the ESR's European Training Curriculum. We hope many more will follow in their footsteps. Find out more about ETAP here

Evaluation of lesion-specific ischemia by Coronary CT angiography

This study utilizes information beyond visual stenosis from coronary CT angiography in order to determine lesion-specific ischemia through a non-invasive manner. Markers of atherosclerosis extracted from coronary CT angiography and machine learning-based CT fractional flow reserve are valuable in assessing the functional significance of coronary stenosis. (Eur Radiol)

Imaging in personalized oncologic approach

This article summarizes the morphologic, and functional/molecular information derived from various imaging examination techniques that reflect biological tumor characteristics and spatial /temporal heterogeneity of tumors at all stages of a cancer patients’ management, highlighting the pivotal role of clinical imaging in the personalized oncologic approach of cancer patients. (Insights Imaging)

Optimisation of input parameters for contrast-enhanced liver US

The study examines the influence of the input parameters of the ultrasound devices on the measurement of perfusion parameters in contrast-enhanced Ultrasonography of the liver and proposes optimum US input parameters - gain, dynamic range, frequency - to minimise variability and obtain a high reproducibility in the quantitative perfusion analysis. (Eur Radiol Exp)

Clinical role of HRCT imaging patterns in patients with hypersensitivity pneumonitis

The study investigates the clinical utility of the HRCT imaging patterns of appearance in patients with hypersensitivity pneumonitis - honeycombing, non- honeycomb fibrosis and without radiologic fibrosis - in relation to prognosis/survival and their influence in the management of the patients. (Chest)

Imaging evaluation of Crohn’s disease strictures

This critical review summarises the current knowledge concerning findings, accuracy and impact on patient management of imaging techniques in the diagnosis of small bowel Crohn’s disease-associated strictures and their ability to characterise strictures in terms of inflammation and fibrosis, in relation to histopathology. (Gut)

High prevalence of benign tumors in partial nephrectomy specimens

This retrospective study in a large cohort of patients that underwent partial nephrectomy for a renal mass deals with the high prevalence of benign pathologic findings (30%) and the role of imaging examinations - especially CT only as preoperative imaging examination - in an attempt to avoid unnecessary surgical intervention.
