Record number of members from the USA

The ESR is pleased to announce that membership from the United States has reached a record high. As of August 6, 2019, 7,277 radiologists, related physicians and scientists from all over the US count themselves ESR members, therefore becoming part of the largest radiological society in the world.

Regina Beets-Tan appointed as one of the Members of the Mission Board for Cancer

The ESR would like to wholeheartedly congratulate our current 2nd Vice President, Prof. Regina Beets-Tan for the honour of being appointed as one of the Members of the Mission Board for Cancer. The European research and innovation missions are a part of Horizon Europe and aim to deliver solutions to some of the greatest challenges facing our world, including cancer, climate change and healthy oceans.

Update from the ESR Journals Family

In 2019, the youngest journal of the family, European Radiology Experimental, has reached one milestone after another: indexation in Medline and its 2-year-launchversary since the publication of the first articles in June and the publication of its 100th article in July. To celebrate those achievements, the Editor in Chief, Professor Francesco Sardanelli has published an Editorial. Click here to read it!

Our other two journals, European Radiology and Insights into Imaging have been thriving in submissions, reaching record numbers since the beginning of this year. Be part of their success story and submit your article to European Radiology and Insights into Imaging.

Recommendations on quality standards in radiological research    |    Radiologic-pathologic correlation for better understanding of diffuse smoking-related lung diseases    |    Minimising radiation dose and procedural duration in pulmonary arteriovenous malformations embolisation     |    Standardization is needed to unleash AI's true power    |    Hybrid imaging in rectal cancer    |    Stenting as part of first-line treatment in Budd-Chiari syndrome    |    Myocardial MR perfusion assessment of microvascular dysfunction in Fabry disease
Recommendations on quality standards in radiological research

This position statement provides substantial insight into the methodology of published studies on T1W hyperintensity of deep brain nuclei following injections of gadolinium-based contrast agents in an attempt to avoid methodological mistakes, resulting in flawed conclusions. The quality standards underlined in this statement are applicable to many fields of radiological research. (Eur Radiol)

Radiologic-pathologic correlation for better understanding of diffuse smoking-related lung diseases

This comprehensive review presents the HRCT reflections of the clinicopathologic manifestations of smoking-related lung injuries, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial diseases such as bronchiolitis, acute eosinophilic pneumonia, histiocytosis, desquamative interstitial pneumonitis and interstitial fibrosing lung diseases. (Insights Imaging)

Minimising radiation dose and procedural duration in pulmonary arteriovenous malformations embolisation

In this study, the authors introduce high-frequency jet ventilation under general anaesthesia with low air volumes at high frequencies to minimise thoracoabdominal motion during pulmonary arteriovenous malformations embolisation with the benefit of reduction of both radiation dose and procedure duration. (Eur Radiol Exp)

Standardization is needed to unleash AI's true power

Although beneficial to brain and abdominal imaging, lack of data sharing and reproducibility and standardization issues may be hindering the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in radiology. Professor Paul Parizel and Professor Daniele Regge provide insight into navigating the complexities of AI-assistance in areas such as workflow integration, medical imaging and diagnosis. Hybrid imaging in rectal cancer

This prospective study investigates the feasibility and potential benefits in diagnostic accuracy by incorporating hybrid imaging (PET/CT and PET/MRI) in the clinical practice for staging and restaging of rectal cancer. (Cancer Imaging)

Stenting as part of first-line treatment in Budd-Chiari syndrome

This randomized controlled trial provides data to support that routine stenting with angioplasty is superior to angioplasty alone for preventing restenosis in patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome. (Lancet Gastroenterol Hepatol)

Myocardial MR perfusion assessment of microvascular dysfunction in Fabry disease

This prospective study underlines the clinical utility of myocardial magnetic resonance perfusion quantification of microvascular dysfunction focusing on a cohort of patients with Fabry disease. Reduced perfusion, particularly in the subendocardium, is an early Fabry disease marker associated with sphingolipids storage, edema and fibrosis. (Circ Cardiovasc Imaging)
