EIBIR: Strategic Research Agenda for Biomedical Imaging

EIBIR in close cooperation with its shareholder societies (including the ESR) and its Scientific Advisory Board has drafted a Strategic Research Agenda for Biomedical Imaging.

This document is aimed at informing policy makers of the need to dedicate future research funding to topics within biomedical imaging and demonstrating how this will help overcome key healthcare challenges facing Europe. Click here to read the EIBIR Strategic Research Agenda.

European Guidelines on Diagnostic Reference Levels for Paediatric Imaging

The ESR and EuroSafe Imaging are proud to announce the publication of the European Guidelines on Diagnostic Reference Levels for Paediatric Imaging prepared by the ESR coordinated PiDRL project in the European Commission’s Radiation Protection Series.

These guidelines have eagerly been awaited by radiologists, radiographers, medical physicists, as well as national radiation protection regulators. They are expected to play an important role in paediatric imaging practice across Europe. Download the guidelines here.

The ESR welcomes continued investments in EU health policies

The ESR welcomes continued investments in EU health policies as part of the next EU budget and the launch of new initiatives to enhance digitalisation of healthcare services across Europe. The ESR will continue to collaborate with the EU institutions and health organisations to shape and implement new initiatives in the field of health. This course is designed for radiologists, radiation-oncologists, surgeons and all others involved or interested in multidisciplinary management of liver, pancreatic, prostate and rectal cancer. It aims to provide knowledge on an integrated approach of imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Didactic lectures followed by workshops simulating multidisciplinary tumour boards will cover all aspects of patients’ management. Read more here.

ESOR courses for EDiR, November 5-10 and 12-14, 2018 - your first step towards diploma success
Secure one of the last few seats available for the ESOR Courses for EDiR in Vienna!
These courses shall assist those entering examinations for the European Diploma in Radiology (EDiR). Each of the nine courses deals with a specific organ/system-oriented topic. The teaching concept includes 20-minute lectures, followed by 40-minute case-based reviews. A live self-assessment test for each lecture will round-off the exercise. Have a look at the detailed programmes here.

ESOR ASKLEPIOS Course on Cardio-Thoracic Imaging Biomarkers, December 10-11, 2018; Valencia/Spain
This course aims to familiarise radiology residents in their final years of training and board-certified radiologists with cutting-edge clinical and quantitative imaging technology. The two-day course addresses the development of radiomics and imaging biomarkers in clinical practice, focusing on the precise and accurate analysis of lung tumours, diffuse lung diseases and cardiac disorders. European faculty members will offer top quality didactic lectures followed by technical considerations and clinical impact discussions in small groups. To view the programme click here.

Hybrid cardiac imaging using PET/MRI    |    Acute mesenteric ischaemia    |    Respiratory level tracking with visual biofeedback     |    Radiomics approach to assess tumour-infiltrating CD8 cells    |    Risk of neoplastic progression of Pancreatic Cancer    |    Oligometastatic disease in prostate cancer
Hybrid cardiac imaging using PET/MRI

This article critically reviews the role and value of integrated PET/MRI in cardiovascular imaging, provides a technical overview of cardiac PET/MRI and practical advice related to the cardiac PET/MRI workflow, identifies cardiovascular applications that can potentially benefit from hybrid PET/MRI, and describes the needs for future development and research. (Eur Radiol)

Acute mesenteric ischaemia

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the anatomy, physiology of mesenteric perfusion and discussions of causes, pathogenesis, and CT findings in various types of acute bowel ischaemia. Familiarity with various imaging features of mesenteric injury is essential to make a timely diagnosis that will lead to improved patient outcomes. (Insights Imaging)

Respiratory level tracking with visual biofeedback

This article aims to present and evaluate a new respiratory level biofeedback system that aids the patient to return to a consistent breath-hold level with potential application in image-guided interventions. (Eur Radiol Exp)

Radiomics approach to assess tumour-infiltrating CD8 cells

This retrospective multicohort study aimed to develop and independently validate a radiomics-based biomarker of tumour-infiltrating CD8 cells in patients included in phase 1 trials of anti-programmed cell death protein (PD)-1 or anti-programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) monotherapy. It also aimed to evaluate the association between the biomarker, and tumour immune phenotype and clinical outcomes of these patients. (Lancet Oncol)

Risk of neoplastic progression of Pancreatic Cancer

This study investigated the incidence of PDAC and risk factors for neoplastic progression in individuals at high risk for PDAC enrolled in a long-term screening study. (Gastroenterology)

Oligometastatic disease in prostate cancer

Oligometastatic disease represents a clinical and anatomical manifestation between localised and polymetastatic disease. In prostate cancer, as with other cancers, recognition of oligometastatic disease enables focal, metastasis-directed therapies. This review assesses imaging methods used to identify metastatic prostate cancer at first diagnosis, at biochemical recurrence, or at the castration-resistant stage. (Lancet Oncol)
