In memoriam

The ESR Board of Directors and the ESR Staff are deeply saddened by the loss of two renowned personalities in radiology.

Prof. Ian Isherwood, former president of the ESR’s forerunner, the European Association of Radiology (EAR), and Prof. Alexander F. Margulis, a long-standing ECR Honorary Member, both passed away earlier this month. They will be fondly remembered for their contributions to radiology and sorely missed as close friends of the ESR.

Contrast-enhanced cone-beam breast-CT (CBBCT): clinical performance compared to mammography and MRI

This prospective institutional review board-approved study aims to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced (CE) cone-beam breast computed tomography (CBBCT) in dense breast tissue and compare it to non-contrast (NC) CBBCT, mammography (MG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Breast ultrasound: recommendations for information to women and referring physicians by the European Society of Breast Imaging

This article summarises the information that should be provided to women and referring physicians about breast ultrasound (US). It illustrates the structure and organisation of the breast US report and of classification systems such as the BI-RADS and consequent management recommendations and provides information about additional or new US technologies. Finally, it answers five frequently asked questions regarding this topic Click here to read the full article. (Insights Imaging)

DNA breaks induced by iodine-containing contrast medium in radiodiagnostics: a problem of tungsten?

Iodine-containing contrast media (ICM) are extensively used to improve image quality and information content in x-ray-based examinations, particularly in computed tomography (CT). In parallel, there is increasing evidence that the use of ICM during CT sessions is associated with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) breaks that may influence the estimation of the risks linked to x-ray exposure. This article searches for the reasons why has iodine been preferred to any other heavy elements to enhance contrast in radiodiagnostics and how to understand such DNA breaks effect. Read more.  (Eur Radiol Exp)

Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Bladder Cancer: Development of VI-RADS (Vesical Imaging-Reporting And Data System)

The aim of this study was to define a standardised approach to imaging and reporting mpMRI for BC, by developing a VI-RADS score. It describes standard imaging protocols and reporting criteria for bladder mpMRI, proposes a five-point VI-RADS score, derived using T2-weighted MRI, diffusion-weighted imaging, and dynamic contrast enhancement, and includes sample images used to understand VI-RADS. Noninvasive, Quantitative Assessment of Liver Fat by MRI‐PDFF as an Endpoint in NASH Trials

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently the most common cause of chronic liver disease worldwide, and the progressive form of this condition, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), has become one of the leading indications for liver transplantation. There is a major unmet need for developing noninvasive, objective, and quantitative biomarkers for diagnosis and assessment of treatment response. This review discusses the role and utility of MRI‐PDFF as a quantitative and noninvasive imaging‐based biomarker in early‐phase NASH trials. (Hepatology)

MRI-Guided Thrombolysis for Stroke with Unknown Time of Onset

Under current guidelines, intravenous thrombolysis is used to treat acute stroke only if it can be ascertained that the time since the onset of symptoms was less than 4.5 hours. This study sought to determine whether patients with stroke with an unknown time of onset and features suggesting recent cerebral infarction on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) would benefit from thrombolysis with the use of intravenous alteplase.
